It’s in the eyes of the beholder
In the smile of a mother

In the solitude of silence

Even in the pain of distance

Hues of different colors

In the soldier’s valour

Sometimes, even in the tears

Or reminiscing the yesteryears

Hidden in a child’s innocence

City’s commotion and dissonance

A brazen fit of laughter

And the words that flatter

Beauty is Godly

Yet far from perfection

Beauty is nothing,

But your reflection.

Safe Haven

A phone call from my old man

Packing my bags, thus began

A journey to my humble abode

Pace of life, suddenly slowed

Sans the skyscrapers and mob

My city, is a heartthrob

Envying the tranquility

Amazed at the docility

Strangely, the days turn longer

Body feels stronger

Heartfelt embraces connect the hearts

All the pieces of the puzzle

Automatically reunite and assemble

There lies no need to play charades

Gladly, exhibit all real shades

This is it, this is where it all began

You travel the globe, but this is where you return

My old man says, the world outside

Is a cauldron of agony and spite

Nonetheless, you have to dive in

This is where it begins

Sharpen your sword,

Tighten those chords,

Enemies hide behind the camouflage

Ready to ambush, with their entourage

Go ahead and fight the war

And come back, not less than a Victor!

I have no words left in me

No anchor to bind me

I have traveled to the other side

In search for someone to match my stride

I walked and walked

Reached a home and knocked

They let me in

Knew the demons within

They fed my hunger,

They forgave me for my blunders

I didn’t hide

Told them all, never lied

They wiped my tears

Heard me with all their ears

A pat on my back

And i hoped to get back on track

A kiss on my forehead

And i slept at ease on my bed

When sun shone brighter

We basked in it and felt lighter

When the snow hit the ground

We were home bound

Always held on,

Until one day I was gone

Nomads travel

Build a home and then they paddle

If they stay longer

The demons inside get stronger

Transient, carefree

That’s how travelers are born to be.

As the hand waves to say goodbye, our soul trembles. There’s something about goodbyes – tragic yet fulfilling. It is like cutting a part of yourself and drowning it in the ocean. Even if you dive into it many years down the line, you will not find that piece.

Endings are never easy. Ending a book you’ve been engrossed in is never easy. As the end approaches, the gloom of closing the book and setting it aside on the shelf makes one uneasy. Same goes with painters, once the painting is complete, the entire process of creating that piece of art and pouring your emotions on that piece of canvas ends.

Goodbyes are often synonymous with suffering. But, it doesn’t have to be like that. There are millions of books awaiting to be read, innumerable canvases awaiting to be painted.

We fight, we fidget, we destroy ourselves. We hit the deepest pits of existence. But little do we realize that amidst the dark clouds, There’s always a silver lining.

The universe is constantly changing. Give it time, this is just the beginning.

When a smile isn’t enough to feel happy

And a meal isn’t why you’re hungry

A sound sleep isn’t enough to ward off fatigue

And finding love seems out of your league

Each day, you play along

Yet realise this isn’t where you belong

The inadequacy continues to grow

“Not enough”, you know down below

Like running water, awaiting to go places

Or the rolling stone running towards flat surfaces

Inevitable is this inadequacy

Even then, hearts seek stability

You build a house brick by brick

In it, you still feel homesick

Be it materialistic pleasures

Or profound spiritual treasures

In the end, this universe is seeking for stability

Hence, justifiable is it’s hostility

Be the swiftly running water

or the raging thunder

Stability is elusive

And happiness as a concept – is delusive!

Bedlam to calm

Oh dear noise,

You carry endless poise

I closely listen to you

Observe, cut through

In your plethora of bedlam

I seek to find my calm

Blamed, yes you are

Judged from afar

In the morning,

Starts with birds’ singing

And the evening

Ends with cars’ honking

And the night

Voices in our head, fight

Losers carry weights

Hence, the misery never abates

Dissect, disassemble

At first, hands may tremble

And soon, noise will be beautiful

The cacophony will sound musical

Choice belongs to you

And that is your clue

This confusion

Is indispensable for our evolution

Oh dear noise,

Do I still have a choice?

Or is it too late to raise my voice?

Happiness – not complicated at all!

Happiness cannot be captured in a piece of currency or consumed like a pizza. Happiness also isn’t about chasing rainbows or flying around with angels. Happiness is deeply personal and extremely subjective.

My mother calculates happiness as devoting her time to god. My sister derives happiness from playing with her 3 year old. My father is happy when he’s at work.

In the last decade, the topic of happiness has created a lot of unrest in our minds. They say ‘happiness is within you’. Well, honestly, I’ve dug deeper than Mariana Trench – still no trace of happiness.

Once I was observing an infant. He laughed his lungs out just by looking at a dog wag it’s tail. I had a hard time imagining myself as an infant. For all i know, i would have given the dog a dirty look and turned around.

Then I realized, an infant is like a clear glass. You can see through – he is transparent. As we grow older, the glass gets tainted. We go on a path that lacks clarity. There are zillions of factors that decide the level of clarity on our glasses. For eg, if i (at my current age) start laughing my heart out at a dog wagging it’s tail, people around me will probably turn me into a mental facility. What I’m trying to say is, we get conscious of what others think of us.

Self awareness is important. But self esteem is also important. We fear being rejected by the society. Hence, the trajectory of our actions isn’t directed towards self awareness, it is directed towards self esteem.

Why do we fear eating alone at a restaurant or watch a movie alone? Is it because people around us might judge you? Well, no one has the time to do that. They are probably busy making themselves acceptable to people like you. Our society is confused. On one hand, we talk about things like ‘do what your heart says’ at the same time, we judge the ones who do.

Doing what makes you happy or your heart wants might end up making you an example of bad choices. Parents will instruct their children to not be like you.

At some point, you have to start giving more weightage to self awareness than self esteem. Only this is how the glass will get clearer and clearer.

Try it! Watch a movie alone and go have dinner at a really fancy place – all by yourself. There’s no feeling better than enjoying your own company (and not sharing your food) !!

Keep smiling 🙂
